Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and postboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered numerous other vandalized vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to its source; officials are presently not informed of any harm in connection with the event," they commented.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior political figure commented the attack left him stunned and required to be addressed promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
