Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
