Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.
This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of the judge's determination was the potential of the former president's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, prompting him to enact a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.
The former president is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.
