Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show draws close, you'll find a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among the most-played games globally continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
