Vladimir Kramnik has broken his silence after the death of American grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky, describing the 29-year-old's loss as a tragedy while accusing critics for launching what he termed an "deeply cynical and illegal targeted harassment" against him and his family.
Kramnik's Statement
The 50-year-old ex-champion, who has faced broad criticism for alleging Naroditsky of digital foul play lacking proof, expressed condolences but denied any individual targeting.
"Despite the tensions, I was the sole individual in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's apparent health concerns a day before his death, openly urged for him to get assistance," Kramnik stated. "The ensuing efforts, right after his passing, to explicitly connect this sorrowful incident to my name … cross all boundaries of basic human morality."
Kramnik asserted his earlier requests for examination of Naroditsky's online play had been overlooked "even with substantial proof", and claimed he would provide material to "appropriate officials". He noted his lawyers were preparing civil and criminal suits over "false accusations" that have led to threats against him and his family.
Investigation Details
The demise of the grandmaster may have been the consequence of substance overuse and is being examined as a potential self-harm case, according to a police report released Thursday. A report from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department says Naroditsky was discovered deceased Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Investigation into sudden death."
"On Sunday October 19th at approximately 07:11pm, officers answered an assist medic call in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the document states. "Upon arrival, an unresponsive subject was found and later pronounced deceased by a medic."
Chess World Response
Outrage regarding Kramnik's conduct has shaken the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura described his actions "appalling", while five-time world champion Carlsen described it as "horrible". GM from India Sarin, who faced Naroditsky in his last digital game, blamed Kramnik for "taking a life", saying his self-appointed pursuit against alleged rule-breakers was ineffective and "totally inappropriate".
Naroditsky's Legacy
A Stanford-educated prodigy and former world youth champion, Naroditsky gathered more than 800k fans on Twitch and YouTube. Known as Danya, he was praised for his wit, insight and modesty, becoming a leading voice in chess's pandemic-era boom. He was also one of the world's finest players under rapid formats, finishing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.
Naroditsky repeatedly refuted the allegations but acknowledged the toll they had taken on his mental health. "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people suspect foul play," Naroditsky remarked in his last online broadcast.
Organizational Statements
The World Chess Federation said this week it was "looking into" Kramnik's behavior. "Kramnik's methodology simply is unacceptable," Fide chief executive Sutovsky commented. The organization plans to honor Naroditsky with a tribute prize.
Federation president Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's official remarks about Naroditsky, prior to and following his passing, would be submitted to the organisation's Ethics and Disciplinary Commission "for independent consideration".
"Human life and dignity are fundamental values universally upheld," Dvorkovich emphasized. "The chess community has always valued the achievements of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such status brings a duty to uphold the principles of fairness and respect."
Family's Hope
Naroditsky's relatives have expressed they wish he is remembered not for the hostility he endured but for "the joy and inspiration he brought people every day". Carlsen described him "an asset to chess", while Hikaru Nakamura described him as "the best of us".
